Description

The Japanese Footbridge, Claude Monet, 1899. Oil on canvas, 81.3 × 101.6 cm. National Gallery of Art, Washington.

In 1899 Monet painted his own bridge, the one he had built over the pond he dug and planted at Giverny. There is no sky. Willows, water lilies and the underside of the bridge fill the canvas edge to edge, and the water gives most of it back as reflection. It is the first great picture of the garden he would spend the rest of his life on.
