By 1906 Monet had stopped painting the banks of his pond and painted only its surface: lily pads, a few pink and white flowers, and the sky and willows held upside down in the water. There is no horizon and nowhere to stand. It is one of the earliest canvases in the series that would occupy him for the last twenty years of his life.
